Hemp Seed Oil - A Beneficial Carrier Oil for Animal CBD Supplements

Learn why hemp seed oil is becoming a preferred carrier oil among animal CBD companies – and veterinarians – due to its rich nutritional properties.

The ancient, industrial, and versatile hemp crop originating from Central Asia is known for its utilization in the fiber, nutrition, and medical industries1. Hemp seeds are a beneficial dietary supplement as they contain “easily digestible protein (20–25%), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), abundant lipids (25–35%), and carbohydrates (20–30%) high in insoluble fiber”1. Hemp seed oil naturally produces stearidonic acid which may aid in neonatal development, overall health, and the immune system2. Enriched with essential fatty acids, α-linolenic acid, and linoleic acid; hemp seed oil also contains long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, making it the only industrial oilseed crop that encompasses this specific fatty acid2. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids may be involved in “immune system regulation, blood clotting, neurotransmitters, cholesterol metabolism, and structure of membrane phospholipids in the brain and the retina”2. Another medicinal benefit of the hemp seed oil is its diverse tocopherol isomer profile which acts as a natural antioxidant in the body leading to the reduction in risk of oxidative stress-related disorders1.  A myriad of bioactive ingredients is contained within hemp seed oil including terpenes containing analgesic, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties as well as flavonoids that may also serve as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent1.

Growing Hemp

The cultivation process of growing industrial hemp is favorable to the environment and the health of the soil1. Hemp can grow in a diverse amount of “agro-ecological conditions” with a fast turn-around period of four to five weeks – a timespan that allows the plant to partake in carbon sequestration1. Due to the amount of fiber in hemp, the hemp plant naturally abolishes weed growth and can be grown without herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. Hemp crops also add nutritional value to the soil by fastening its roots to block soil erosion, nutrient leaching, and by acting as a phytoremediation tool.

Hemp Seed Oil Versus MCT Oils

Other hemp or CBD companies often choose to utilize Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) Oil as a more affordable option for a carrier oil. However, that choice comes at a valuable cost.3 Though MCT oil’s lack of taste or smell makes it a valuable feeding option, it may exert negative side effects on the liver and elevate beta-oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis.3 Most MCT oils are either derived from coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil, or palm oil. Fractionated coconut oil comes from heating the coconut oil past its melting point and than letting it cool down, a process that strips the oil of its lauric acid content.4 Palm oil contains a much higher profile of saturated fats compared to alternative vegetable oils and is utilized in everything from food products to the cosmetic industry. That being said, it has been shown to cause damage to the cardiovascular system.5 Palm oil farming and cultivation have also led to expansive deforestation, water and soil pollution, and loss of endangered species.5 More often than not, consumers are unaware of whether MCT oil originates from coconut oil or palm oil, and the only way to be sure is for the manufacturer to provide that detailed information.

HempMyPet™'s Full Spectrum Hemp Seed Oil Formulas

At HempMy Pet™, we do not want our customers guessing where their products are originating from. We are proud to utilize fresh and high-quality organic hemp seed oil as one of our main carrier oils and are happy to provide certificates of origin from our suppliers including third-party certificates of analysis. In our eyes, the cost is worth the myriad of benefits that hemp seed carrier oil provides.

We use virgin (cold-pressed) certified organic hemp seed oil that is sourced from either Colorado or Canada. Our Full-Spectrum Hemp Extract (CBD, CBG, CBC, etc.) in a base of hemp seed carrier oil comes in a 1oz bottle and combines cannabidiol, tetrahydrocannabinol (under 0.3%), terpenes, flavonoids, phytocannabinoids, stearidonic acid, essential fatty acids, α-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, and tocopherols. All of these ingredients combined together in our full-spectrum hemp formulas are synergized to produce the entourage effect.6

HempMy Pet™’s Organic Hemp Seed Oil comes in 250mg and 1,000mg concentrations. It can easily be administered orally, whether your clients choose to add to their pet’s food, treats, or simply allow them to lick it out of their hand. The only thing we advise against is allowing animals to lick the product directly off of the dropper, as the introduction of saliva into the product could potentially lead to contamination and cause degradation of the product (just the same as any human products).
