Dog Vomiting White Foam: The Causes, the Bloat Warning, and What to Do Tonight

If your dog is retching but bringing up little or nothing but foam, and the belly looks swollen or tight, the dog is restless, drooling or can't settle — that is bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) until a vet says otherwise. Go to the nearest emergency vet now, not in the morning. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons puts mortality at about 15% even with treatment, and higher once signs have lasted more than six hours. Also go now for: pale gums, collapse, blood or “coffee grounds” in the vomit, or any chance your dog ate a toxin, a toy, a sock or a cannabis edible. ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435.

The short answer: white foam is usually saliva and stomach mucus whipped up with air — the stomach has nothing else in it to bring up. A single episode in a dog that is otherwise bright, eating and drinking is most often an empty or irritated stomach: classically early in the morning, before breakfast, in a dog that eats once a day. The fix is often as simple as a small late-evening meal. But foam is also what comes up when a dog retches with a twisted stomach (bloat), what a dog with kennel cough brings up after a honking cough, and an early sign of pancreatitis, toxins or a blockage. The rule: once, with a normal dog afterwards — watch for a few hours, then small bland meals. More than once in 24 hours, or with lethargy, a refused meal, pain, blood or a swollen belly — call the vet. Unproductive retching plus a swollen belly — emergency, now.

Why It's White Foam — and Not Food or Yellow Bile

The colour tells you what part of the stomach and gut is involved, which narrows the cause before you do anything else.

What comes up What it usually is What it points to
White foam, frothy Saliva and stomach mucus mixed with air An empty or irritated stomach, retching with nothing to bring up, or foam produced by coughing
Yellow foam or liquid Bile from the small intestine that has refluxed into the stomach An empty stomach for too long — the pattern behind bilious vomiting syndrome
Undigested food Food that never left the stomach Eating too fast, a sudden diet change, or (if it happens hours later) slow stomach emptying
Grass and foam Grass the dog ate, wrapped in mucus Usually harmless on its own; repeated grass-eating plus vomiting is worth a vet visit
Red streaks, or dark “coffee grounds” Fresh blood, or digested blood Stomach irritation at best, an ulcer or toxin at worst — call the vet the same day

The Causes, Side by Side

Matched by what you actually see. None of the pages ranking for this question puts them in a table; this is the part to bookmark.

Cause What it looks like The tell Urgency
Empty stomach / bilious vomiting Foam or yellow bile, usually early morning or late at night, dog fine afterwards and eager for breakfast Happens before meals, never after; dog fed once a day Low — try a small bedtime meal; see the vet if it keeps happening
Mild gastritis / dietary indiscretion One or two episodes after scavenging, a rich treat or garbage Something new went in during the last day Low to moderate — watch, rest the stomach, bland food
Kennel cough A loud honking cough that ends in a gag and a little white froth The foam follows a cough, not a heave; recent boarding, daycare or dog park Moderate — call the vet (they will ask you to wait outside, it is contagious)
Motion sickness or stress Drooling, lip licking and foam in the car or at the vet Only in the car or a known stressful situation Low — see Dramamine for dogs
Pancreatitis Repeated vomiting, hunched “prayer” posture, belly pain, off food, often after a fatty meal Pain plus refusal to eat High — vet today
Toxin or foreign body Repeated vomiting, sometimes foam only once the stomach is empty, lethargy, drooling Something is missing — a sock, a toy, a pill, a gummy High — vet or poison line now
Kidney or liver disease Intermittent vomiting in an older dog who drinks and urinates more or is losing weight Chronic, on and off over weeks Moderate — book bloodwork this week
Bloat (GDV) Retching repeatedly with little or nothing coming up but foam, swollen belly, restlessness, drooling, collapse Unproductive retching plus a distended abdomen, usually a large deep-chested dog Emergency — minutes count

Causes from VCA: vomiting in dogs, AKC: dog throwing up white foam, and the AVMA on kennel cough.

The Bloat Check: 60 Seconds That Matter

Bloat is the one cause of white foam where waiting until morning can cost the dog's life. Here is what to look for.

Question 1
Is anything actually coming up?

A dog with a twisted stomach heaves and retches, over and over, and produces little or nothing — maybe a mouthful of foam. Merck describes the classic picture as nonproductive retching, hypersalivation and restlessness.

Question 2
Does the belly look bigger or feel tight?

VCA notes the swelling is often most obvious on the left side, just behind the ribs, and sounds hollow if you tap it. Early on it can be subtle — don't let a normal-looking belly talk you out of going if the retching fits.

Question 3
Is this a bloat-prone dog?

Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Weimaraners, Irish and Gordon Setters, Standard Poodles, Basset Hounds, Dobermans, German Shepherds — large and deep-chested. VCA estimates dogs over 100 lb have roughly a 20% lifetime risk. Small breeds can bloat too.

One heave of foam and a dog that wants breakfast is an empty stomach. Repeated heaving with nothing coming up and a tight belly is an emergency. Those two look the same for about thirty seconds.

Mortality figures vary by source — VCA cites 10–45% even in relatively uncomplicated cases, ACVS about 15% — but every source agrees on two things: time matters, and dogs whose signs have lasted more than six hours do worse. If you are unsure, go. A vet who finds a simple upset stomach has cost you an evening; a missed bloat cannot be undone. Prevention for at-risk breeds: two or three smaller meals a day instead of one, slower eating, and asking your vet about a preventive gastropexy at spay or neuter.

Why Your Dog Throws Up Foam in the Morning

This is the single most common pattern, and it has a name: bilious vomiting syndrome. The stomach is empty for a long stretch overnight, bile refluxes back from the small intestine, the stomach lining is irritated, and the dog brings up foam or yellow bile — typically early in the morning, before food.

The only published case series, from Colorado State University's teaching hospital records over ten years, found 20 dogs given the diagnosis. Treatment with more frequent feeding and a late-evening meal, sometimes with an acid reducer, improved 12 of the 17 confirmed cases. The study also found something worth knowing: in three dogs the diagnosis was later changed to stomach cancer, dietary indiscretion and liver disease. “It's just an empty stomach” is a reasonable first guess, not a diagnosis — if the bedtime meal doesn't fix it within a week or two, your vet should look further.

How Many Times Before You Call the Vet?

The pages ranking for this question disagree — some say more than once in 24 hours, one says three or more. Here is a rule that holds across all of them.

  • Go now, regardless of count: unproductive retching with a swollen belly; blood or coffee grounds; pale gums; collapse; a possible toxin, foreign object or cannabis edible; a puppy, a senior, or a dog with a known health condition that is vomiting repeatedly.
  • Call the vet today: more than once in 24 hours; vomiting plus refusing food or water, lethargy, diarrhoea, fever or belly pain; foam after a cough with lethargy or laboured breathing.
  • Watch at home: a single episode in an adult dog who is bright, wants to eat and drink, and acts normal afterwards. Watch closely for the next two to three hours, and see the vet if anything changes or it happens again.
  • Book an appointment: vomiting that keeps recurring over days or weeks, even if the dog seems fine in between, or that doesn't settle within 48 hours of home care.

What to Give a Dog After Vomiting White Foam

For the single, uncomplicated episode only. Anything on the “call the vet” list above, call first.

  • Rest the stomach briefly. Vet sources range from a few hours to 12 hours of no food; VCA says only until the vomiting appears controlled. For a healthy adult dog, skipping one meal is usually enough. Puppies, toy breeds and diabetic dogs should not be fasted without a vet's say-so.
  • Water in small amounts. Offer small sips or ice cubes rather than a full bowl the dog will gulp and bring back up. Water should never be withheld for long.
  • Then bland food, small and often. Plain boiled chicken (no skin, no bones, no seasoning) with plain white rice, in a few small meals. Transition back to the normal diet over several days.
  • Add the bedtime meal if the vomiting was early-morning foam — a small portion of the normal food last thing at night.
  • No human medicines. Pepto-Bismol, ibuprofen, aspirin and anti-nausea tablets can harm dogs or mask a serious problem. Do not induce vomiting unless a vet or poison line tells you to.
  • Recheck at 48 hours. If the dog is not back to normal, see the vet.

Where Hemp Fits — and Where It Doesn't

We make hemp products for dogs, so here is the straight answer.

A vomiting dog
No role

Do not give hemp, CBD or any supplement to a dog that is actively vomiting. It will not fix the cause, it can add to the stomach upset, and nothing should go in until the dog is keeping water down.

Nausea research
Not evidence for dogs

CBD has reduced vomiting in rodent and shrew studies — but one of those found a low dose reduced vomiting while a high dose made it worse, and none were oral studies in dogs. In canine trials, vomiting shows up as a side effect: 2 of 23 dogs in one osteoarthritis trial.

Stress-related upset
Where it can fit

If your dog's tummy trouble only shows up around predictable stress — travel, storms, the vet — a calming supplement alongside behaviour work is a reasonable thing to discuss with your vet, once a medical cause has been ruled out.

One more distinction a hemp company is well placed to make: a dog that ate a cannabis edible (THC) can vomit, wobble, dribble urine and be very sensitive to light and sound — that is a vet visit. Hemp products under 0.3% THC do not do this. See marijuana toxicity in dogs vs hemp. And if vomiting started after you began any new supplement, ours included, stop it and tell your vet — see hemp side effects in dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I give my dog after vomiting white foam?
For a single episode in an otherwise bright dog: rest the stomach briefly (skipping one meal is usually enough for a healthy adult), offer water in small sips, then feed small amounts of a bland diet such as plain boiled chicken and white rice, returning to normal food over several days. Do not give human medicines. Puppies, toy breeds and diabetic dogs should not be fasted without a vet's advice.

How many times should a dog throw up before going to the vet?
Call the vet if your dog vomits more than once in 24 hours, or even once if it comes with lethargy, refusing food or water, belly pain, diarrhoea, fever or blood. Go immediately for unproductive retching with a swollen belly, pale gums, collapse, or a possible toxin or swallowed object. A single episode in a dog that acts normal afterwards can be watched at home for a few hours.

What could be causing my dog's white vomit?
Most often an empty or irritated stomach, especially early in the morning. Other causes include mild gastritis from eating something new, kennel cough (foam after a honking cough), motion sickness or stress, pancreatitis, toxins or a swallowed object, kidney or liver disease, and bloat. The pattern — when it happens and what else the dog is doing — usually tells them apart.

What home remedy can I give my dog for vomiting?
The safe home approach is a short rest for the stomach, small sips of water, then small bland meals of plain boiled chicken and rice. For early-morning foam, a small bedtime meal often prevents it. Avoid giving human medicines or inducing vomiting unless a vet or poison line tells you to, and see the vet if the dog is not back to normal within 48 hours.

Why does my dog throw up white foam in the morning?
Usually because the stomach has been empty overnight. Bile refluxes into the empty stomach and irritates it, and the dog brings up foam or yellow bile before breakfast — a pattern called bilious vomiting syndrome. In a Colorado State University case series, more frequent feeding with a late-evening meal improved most confirmed cases. If a bedtime meal does not fix it within a week or two, see your vet, because a few dogs in that series turned out to have other diseases.

Is a dog throwing up white foam an emergency?
Usually not, but sometimes very much so. A single episode in a dog that acts normal afterwards is rarely urgent. Repeated retching that produces little or nothing but foam, with a swollen or tight belly, drooling and restlessness, is the classic sign of bloat (GDV), which is fatal without fast surgery — go to an emergency vet immediately.

Can kennel cough make a dog throw up white foam?
Yes. Kennel cough causes a loud honking cough that often ends in a gag or retch, bringing up white froth that looks like vomit. The tell is that the foam follows a cough rather than a stomach heave. Call your vet — it is contagious — and seek care promptly if the dog is lethargic, off food, feverish or breathing hard.

Can I give my dog CBD or hemp for vomiting?
No. Do not give hemp, CBD or any supplement to a dog that is actively vomiting. There are no canine studies of CBD for nausea, the animal research is mixed (in one study a low dose reduced vomiting and a high dose made it worse), and vomiting is a reported side effect in canine CBD trials. Find and treat the cause with your vet first.

The Short Version

White foam is an empty or irritated stomach most of the time — especially early-morning foam in a dog that eats once a day, which a small bedtime meal often fixes. Once, with a normal dog afterwards: watch, rest the stomach, small bland meals. More than once in 24 hours, or with lethargy, pain, a refused meal or blood: vet today. Repeated retching with little coming up and a swollen belly, especially in a large deep-chested dog: emergency, now.
