Cat Dandruff: Why It Happens, Mites vs Dry Skin, and What Actually Helps

See a vet soon — not just a new shampoo — if the flakes come with hair loss in round patches, scabs or crusts, itching that won't stop, or if anyone in the house develops itchy red bumps or a ring-shaped rash. Two common causes of “dandruff” in cats, Cheyletiella mites and ringworm, can spread to people and other pets. Also see the vet if dandruff appears alongside weight loss, more thirst or urination, vomiting, or changes in appetite — flaky skin can be the first visible sign of an illness inside. Never use dog flea shampoo, tea tree oil or human dandruff shampoo on a cat.

The short answer: cat dandruff is dead skin that is shedding faster than the cat can groom it away. The most useful clue is where the flakes are. Flakes concentrated along the lower back and the base of the tail usually mean the cat can't reach there — overweight, stiff with arthritis, or sore. Flakes that seem to move, an itchy cat, and itchy bites on people point to Cheyletiella mites (“walking dandruff”). Fine flakes all over in winter usually mean dry indoor air or too little water and essential fatty acids in the diet. What helps: find the cause first, brush daily, get more water into the cat (wet food, a fountain), year-round flea control, and a diet with adequate omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Cats need linoleic acid in their diet for a healthy skin barrier — kittens fed without it developed poor skin and coat in a classic nutrition study.

Where the Flakes Are Tells You What's Wrong

Part your cat's fur in three places — along the spine above the hips, at the base of the tail, and on the shoulders — under good light. The pattern is the diagnosis's first draft.

Lower back and tail base
The cat can't reach

Grooming is how cats clear dead skin. A cat that is overweight, arthritic or in pain stops reaching the lower back, and flakes and mats build up exactly there. Texas A&M's veterinary college lists obesity, arthritis pain, kidney disease, diabetes and pancreatitis as things that interrupt grooming. A clean front and a flaky back end is the giveaway.

Along the back, flakes that move
Cheyletiella mites

“Walking dandruff” is tiny mites carrying flakes as they move across the skin. Merck notes scaling along the back, itching (though some cats barely itch), and that it is highly contagious between pets — and to people, who get itchy bites. Look at a flake on dark paper with a magnifying glass for a minute.

Fine flakes all over
Dry air, water, diet

Even, fine flaking across the whole coat — especially in winter with the heating on — usually points to dry air, a cat that drinks too little, or a diet short on essential fatty acids. Hill's notes dry winter air can increase flakes. This is the one most often fixable at home.

A flaky lower back on a cat with a clean, glossy front isn't a skin problem — it's a cat that can't turn around far enough. Treat the weight or the joints and the dandruff often goes with it.

Mites, Ringworm or Dry Skin? Telling Them Apart

The three you most need to separate, because two of them are contagious. None of the pages ranking for “cat dandruff” puts these side by side.

Dry skin / grooming problem Cheyletiella mites Ringworm (a fungus)
What the flakes look like Fine white flakes; heaviest where the cat can't groom Larger scales along the back that may appear to move Scaling with round patches of hair loss, broken hairs, crusts
Itchy? Usually mild or none Often, but some cats don't itch at all Variable
Other pets affected? No Often — highly contagious, especially in multi-pet homes Can be
People affected? No Yes — itchy red bites Yes — a red, ring-shaped rash
How it's confirmed Ruling out the others Tape test, flea comb or skin scrape — mites are easy to miss, so vets often treat on trial Wood's lamp, microscopy and fungal culture
Treatment Brushing, water, diet, humidity; manage weight or pain Vet-prescribed parasite treatment for 6–8 weeks, every animal in the house, plus the bedding Topical plus oral antifungal for at least 6 weeks; environmental cleaning

From the Merck Veterinary Manual on mite infestation in cats and Cornell Feline Health Center on ringworm. Untreated ringworm can take 9–12 months to clear on its own.

Every Cause, in One Place

Cause The tell What to do
Dry indoor air Worse in winter, fine flakes all over, cat otherwise well Humidifier in the room the cat uses most; more water intake
Low water intake Dry-food-only cat, small dark urine clumps in the litter Add wet food; a water fountain; bowls away from food
Diet short on fatty acids Dull, dry coat; cheap or home-made diet A complete, balanced cat food; ask your vet about a feline omega supplement
Obesity Can't feel the ribs; flakes and mats on the lower back A vet-guided weight plan — slow loss only; fast weight loss is dangerous in cats
Arthritis or pain Older cat, stops jumping up, flakes on back and hips Vet exam and pain management — see hip problems in cats
Cheyletiella mites Moving flakes, itchy cat, itchy people, other pets affected Vet treatment for every animal; clean bedding and carpets
Ringworm Round patches of hair loss, a rash on a person Vet now; it is zoonotic
Fleas or allergies Itching, small scabs (miliary dermatitis), over-grooming Year-round flea control on every pet; vet work-up for allergy
Primary seborrhoea Persians and some long-haired breeds; greasy or scaly coat from a young age Vet-prescribed anti-seborrhoeic shampoo routine
Internal illness Dandruff plus weight loss, thirst, vomiting, appetite change Bloodwork — hyperthyroidism, diabetes and kidney disease can all show in the coat first

The Grooming Problem Is Bigger Than It Looks

Most cat dandruff articles mention obesity in passing. The numbers say it deserves more. In a 2022 study of 206 cats aged 7–10, 45% were overweight and 12% obese, and cats with an abnormal orthopaedic exam were significantly more likely to have a matted coat. Dental disease was linked to matting too — a sore mouth makes grooming unpleasant.

That matters for what you do next. If the dandruff sits on the lower back of a middle-aged or older cat, a medicated shampoo treats the symptom; a vet check for weight, joints and teeth treats the reason. Arthritis in cats is badly under-recognised because cats hide it well — the clues are a cat that no longer jumps onto the counter, hesitates on stairs, or sleeps more.

How to Get Rid of Cat Dandruff at Home

Once mites, ringworm and illness are off the list, these are the steps that actually help.

  • Brush every day. Texas A&M and Hill's both recommend daily brushing — twice daily for long-haired cats. It lifts dead skin, spreads natural oils, and does the lower-back grooming the cat can't. Use a soft brush or a rubber grooming mitt; go gently over bony areas.
  • Get more water in. Wet food is the easiest way; a water fountain and several bowls placed away from food help too.
  • Run a humidifier in the room the cat sleeps in during dry winter months.
  • Check the diet. A complete, balanced commercial cat food should cover essential fatty acids. If your vet suggests an omega supplement, use one made for cats — PetMD warns against human fish-oil products for cats. The evidence for fatty acids on skin is real but modest: one review called many trials “generally disappointing,” while the MSD Veterinary Manual notes that about half of cats with allergic itch show some improvement.
  • Year-round flea control on every pet in the house, indoor cats included — it also keeps Cheyletiella away.
  • Bathe only with a cat shampoo, and only if your vet suggests it. Cat skin has a different pH from human skin; Purina's vets advise against human, baby and dish soap, and dog flea shampoos can contain permethrin, which is dangerous to cats.
  • Never use tea tree oil. The Pet Poison Helpline warns that a few concentrated drops can cause severe poisoning in cats — drooling, wobbliness, tremors, low body temperature and liver injury.

Where Hemp Fits — and Where It Doesn't

We make hemp products for cats, so here is the straight answer.

Mites, ringworm, illness
No role

Parasites, fungus and internal disease need a diagnosis and real treatment. No oil, ours included, treats any of them, and a supplement should never delay the vet visit.

Skin and coat
The carrier oil is the point

Our cat tincture is made in hemp seed oil, which is 76–83% polyunsaturated fat, mostly linoleic acid with alpha-linolenic acid in roughly a 3:1 ratio. Linoleic acid is essential for cats and part of the skin barrier. There is no clinical trial of CBD for dandruff in cats, and we are not claiming one.

The stiff, older cat
Early research only

A 2025 placebo-controlled trial of a CBD/CBDA paste in cats with arthritis pain reported lower pain scores at six weeks — but 12 of 26 cats dropped out, mostly because they refused the paste. Promising, small, and a conversation for your vet.

Cats handle cannabinoids differently from dogs and have far less published research, so feline servings are smaller and need a slower start — see why cats process hemp differently, is CBD safe for cats and serving sizes for cats. If your cat takes any medication, ask your vet first.

When to See the Vet

  • Soon: round patches of hair loss, crusts or scabs; constant itching or over-grooming; flakes that move; other pets itchy; anyone in the house with an itchy rash.
  • Soon: dandruff with weight loss, more thirst or urination, vomiting, or appetite change — bloodwork can catch hyperthyroidism, diabetes or kidney disease early.
  • At the next visit: dandruff on the lower back of an overweight or older cat — ask about weight, joints and teeth.
  • If home care hasn't helped in four to six weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get rid of dandruff on a cat?
Find the cause first. If a vet has ruled out mites, ringworm and illness, brush your cat every day (twice daily for long-haired cats), increase water intake with wet food or a fountain, run a humidifier in dry winter months, keep flea control going year-round, and make sure the diet supplies essential fatty acids. If the flakes are on the lower back of an overweight or older cat, ask your vet about weight and joint pain — fixing the grooming problem often fixes the dandruff.

Why do indoor cats get dandruff?
Indoor cats are exposed to dry heated air in winter, often eat only dry food and drink little, gain weight more easily, and can develop arthritis that stops them grooming their lower back. Indoor cats can also still pick up fleas and mites brought in on people or other pets, which is why year-round flea control matters for them too.

How do I know if my cat has mites or dandruff?
Mite flakes (Cheyletiella, or walking dandruff) tend to be concentrated along the back, may appear to move if you watch them on dark paper, often come with itching, spread to other pets, and can cause itchy bites on people. Ordinary dandruff doesn't move or spread. A vet confirms mites with a tape test, flea comb or skin scrape — and because mites are easy to miss, a negative test doesn't fully rule them out.

What is a silent killer for cats?
High blood pressure and chronic kidney disease are the two most often called silent killers in cats, because they cause few early signs; hypertension is usually secondary to kidney or thyroid disease and can cause sudden blindness. Diabetes and hyperthyroidism also develop quietly — and a change in coat quality, including new dandruff, can be one of the first visible clues. Regular check-ups with bloodwork, twice yearly for older cats, catch them early.

Is cat dandruff contagious to humans?
Ordinary dandruff is not. But two causes of flaky skin in cats are: Cheyletiella mites can cause itchy red bites on people, and ringworm (a fungus, not a worm) can cause a red, ring-shaped rash. If anyone in the household develops itchy skin lesions, tell both your doctor and your vet.

Can I use human dandruff shampoo on my cat?
No. Cat skin has a different pH from human skin, and human, baby and dandruff shampoos can irritate it; some ingredients are unsafe if licked. Dog flea shampoos can contain permethrin, which is dangerous to cats, and tea tree oil can poison cats in small amounts. Use only a shampoo made for cats, and only if your vet recommends bathing.

Does fish oil help cat dandruff?
It can help some cats. Cats need linoleic acid (an omega-6) for their skin barrier, and omega-3s are used as an add-on for inflammatory skin disease; the MSD Veterinary Manual notes about half of cats with allergic itch show some improvement on essential fatty acids. Results are modest and take weeks. Use a product made for cats, not human fish oil, and ask your vet about the amount.

Can I give my cat hemp oil for dry skin?
Hemp seed oil is rich in linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, the fatty acids involved in the skin barrier, which is why it can be part of a skin-and-coat routine. There is no clinical trial of CBD for dandruff in cats. Rule out mites, ringworm and illness with your vet first, start with a low-strength product made for cats, and go slowly — cats process cannabinoids differently from dogs.

The Short Version

Look at where the flakes are. Lower back and tail base: the cat can't reach — think weight, arthritis or pain. Flakes that move, an itchy cat, itchy people: mites, see the vet. Round bald patches: ringworm, see the vet. Fine flakes all over in winter: dry air, water and diet — brush daily, add wet food or a fountain, run a humidifier, and keep flea control going all year. Cat shampoo only, and never tea tree oil.

The research behind our claims
90-day trial · Colorado State University

HempMy Pet ran its own 90-day study of 37 dogs with chronic joint discomfort. Of the 32 that completed it, 30 (93%) showed a benefit, and 94% of owners reported their dog's quality of life had improved. It was overseen by Dr. Robin Downing, DVM, MS of the Downing Center for Animal Pain Management, with Lori Kogan, Ph.D. and Peter W. Hellyer, DVM of Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, and published in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. Our trial was in dogs. Cats process cannabinoids differently and have far less published research, which is why our feline guidance is more conservative — see why cats process hemp differently.
