The short answer: the best CBD oil for horses is a full-spectrum hemp extract with a current certificate of analysis, a stated mg of CBD per mL, and research on the actual product, in a bottle large enough to last a month. We compared six horse CBD brands on 30 October 2026. Large oil bottles cost $0.031 to $0.080 per mg of CBD, which is about $187 to $480 a month for a 1,000-lb horse at 200 mg a day. Only one brand, HempMy Pet, grows its own hemp and has university studies of its own horse oil; four of the six have no study of their product at all. Below: the price-per-mg table, quality and track-record tables, what the horse research actually found, dosing by weight, and the competition rules.
Written by Marc Brannigan, Co-Founder & CEO of HempMy Pet. Last updated 30 October 2026. Disclosure: HempMy Pet makes one of the oils compared here, and we are not the cheapest per mg. Every competitor figure comes from that brand's own product, About and policy pages on the date above, linked in the tables.
Best CBD Oil for Horses: Price per mg Compared
Horse CBD is sold in sizes from 1,500 to 8,000 mg, so bottle price tells you nothing. This table shows each brand's largest standard horse oil, what it costs per milligram of CBD, and what a month costs.
| Brand / product | Largest bottle | Price | Price per mg CBD | 30 days, 1,000-lb horse* | Spectrum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
HempMy Pet 5000mg Large Dog & Horse Formula |
5,000 mg | $199.00 | $0.040 | $239 | Full |
| Innovet CBD Oil for Horses |
6,000 mg | $215.95 | $0.036 | $216 | Full |
| Green Element CBD Oil for Horses |
8,000 mg | $249.99 | $0.031 | $187 | Full |
| Bailey's CBD CBD Oil for Horses |
1,500 mg | $119.99 | $0.080 | $480 | Full |
| HolistaPet CBD Oil for Horses |
7,500 mg | $249.95 | $0.033 | $200 | Broad (no THC) |
*6,000 mg over 30 days: 200 mg a day, about 0.44 mg per kg for a 1,000-lb (454 kg) horse, inside the 0.3 to 0.6 mg/kg range used in the Tarleton State studies. List prices before sales or subscriptions, from each brand's product page on 30 Oct 2026; Bailey's and Innovet were running sales that day. ElleVet sells pellets rather than oil, so it is in the track-record table below but not priced per mg here.
Six horse CBD brands, and only two can point to a study of their own product. Everyone else is asking you to trust research done on somebody else's oil.
Quality Checks: Strength, Carrier Oil and Lab Results
Price per mg only means something if the milligrams are real and easy to measure. Here is how concentrated each oil is, what it is mixed with, and whether lab results are public.
| Brand | CBD per mL | Carrier oil | Organic claim | Lab results (COA) public? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HempMy Pet | 42 mg/mL 118 mL (4 fl oz), pump |
Olive oil | Own Colorado farm | Yes, every batch |
| Innovet | 200 mg/mL 30 mL |
Hemp seed oil (MCT-free) | Not stated | Yes (posted COA dated 2023) |
| Green Element | 34 mg/mL 237 mL (8 fl oz) |
Camelina oil | USDA Organic hemp extract (ingredient) | Yes, equine COA |
| Bailey's CBD | 25 mg/mL ~60 mL |
MCT (coconut) | USDA Organic hemp extract (ingredient) | Yes (batch dated 2024) |
| HolistaPet | 63 mg/mL 120 mL |
Hemp seed oil | Not stated | Yes, COA page |
CBD per mL is mg per bottle divided by the volume the brand states (Bailey's volume is worked out from its stated 25 mg/mL). Higher mg per mL means less liquid per serving; a pump or a marked syringe makes any strength easy to measure. "Ingredient" means the claim is in the ingredient list rather than a certified-product seal. Check that the COA date and lot match your bottle; a COA that is a year or more old may not describe what ships today.
Who Makes It: Farm, Research and Track Record
The two questions horse owners ask us most: who grows the hemp, and has anyone actually tested this product in horses?
| Brand | Grows its own hemp? | Study of its own horse product? | Founded | Guarantee / returns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HempMy Pet | Yes, own Colorado farm | Yes, three Tarleton State studies of this oil (J Anim Sci 2021, 2022, plus a thesis) | 2016 | 30-day returns |
| Innovet | Not stated (company FAQ says hemp is imported) | None found | 2005 (company) | Refund or exchange within 30 days |
| Green Element | No, small family farms | None found | Not stated | 30-day guarantee, return shipping paid |
| Bailey's CBD | No, a partner farm in Boulder, CO | None found | 2017 | 30 days, unused items only |
| HolistaPet | No, sourced from US farms | None found | 2017 | 30 days, opened products OK |
| ElleVet (pellets) | Not stated (proprietary Colorado-grown cultivar) | Yes, with caveats: a 2024 study of its CBD+CBDA oil in 8 horses (Thomson 2024); two authors consult for ElleVet; its horse product is a pellet | Not stated | At the company's discretion |
From each brand's About, FAQ and refund-policy pages and a Europe PMC search of the published veterinary literature for each brand name, 30 Oct 2026. "None found" means no peer-reviewed or university study testing that brand's own product turned up. cbdMD, which some older roundups still rank, no longer sells a horse product. HempMy Pet's Tarleton results are published as Journal of Animal Science conference abstracts and a master's thesis, not full journal papers; we describe exactly what they did and did not find below.
Best CBD Oil for Horses by Need
- Best with research on the oil itself and its own farm: HempMy Pet 5000mg ($0.040/mg). The only brand here with both, and a pump top (about 20 mg per pump) so servings are counted, not guessed.
- Lowest price per mg: Green Element 8000 mg ($0.031/mg) and HolistaPet 7500 mg ($0.033/mg).
- Most concentrated: Innovet 6000 mg at a stated 200 mg per mL, so the least liquid per serving ($0.036/mg). No organic claim, and its company FAQ says the hemp is imported.
- Zero THC: HolistaPet, the only broad-spectrum oil compared, with the most flexible returns (opened products accepted).
- Smallest commitment: Bailey's 1500 mg ($119.99) if you want to trial CBD on a smaller budget, though it is the most expensive per mg ($0.080).
- Pellets instead of oil: ElleVet, the other brand with a study of its own product, though that study tested its oil and its horse product is a pellet.
What the Horse Research Actually Shows
Horse CBD research is young and small, but there is now enough of it to say what CBD has and has not been shown to do, and what doses were used. Here is every study we rely on, including the results that did not go our way.
| Study | Horses and design | Dose | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turner, Guay et al., Tarleton State, J Anim Sci 2021 (HempMy Pet oil) | 8 stalled stock-type horses; single oral serving vs olive-oil control | 0.3 or 0.6 mg/kg | Stereotypic stall behaviors lower (P = 0.03); on 0.6 mg/kg, aggression 113 → 26 and pawing 69 → 27 counts. Five days of daily dosing showed no behavior difference. |
| Turner, Guay et al., Tarleton State, J Anim Sci 2022 (HempMy Pet oil) | 6 geldings; 3-hour trailer ride, crossover | 0.6 mg/kg | No difference in cortisol (P = 0.646), blood lactate or temperature vs control. CBD did not measurably change the physical stress response to transport. |
| Cohen, Tarleton State thesis (HempMy Pet Equine Formula) | 8-horse dose study + 7-gelding feed crossover | 0.3 vs 0.6 mg/kg | Blood CBD peaked 1 to 4 h, baseline by ~24 h; no accumulation over 5 days; no adverse effects on heart rate, glucose or feed intake; longer first meal on CBD. |
| Wang, Wakshlag et al., Am J Vet Res 2025 | 7 horses; full-spectrum CBD vs CBDA oil, 6 weeks each, crossover | 1 mg/kg twice daily | No clinically relevant bloodwork changes; liver ultrasound and biopsy normal. CBDA peak 103 vs CBD 12 ng/mL. |
| Yocom et al., J Equine Vet Sci 2022 | 12 horses, randomized; 6 weeks of twice-daily CBD | 0.5 or 1.5 mg/kg twice daily | CBD reached joint fluid in 8 of 12. Mild low calcium in all horses and higher liver enzymes in 8 of 12, improving or normal within 10 days of stopping. |
| Interlandi et al., Front Vet Sci 2024 | 20 horses with mild joint osteoarthritis; CBD + phenylbutazone vs phenylbutazone alone | 0.03 mg/kg daily, 14 days | Lower Horse Chronic Pain Scale scores in the CBD group (median 3 vs 7); lower heart rate, respiratory rate and oxidative stress. |
| Wermer et al., Front Vet Sci 2026 | 13 Connemara ponies (7 with equine metabolic syndrome), 21 days | 2 mg/kg twice daily | Well tolerated, but insulin response rose on CBD (p = 0.046) and CBD accumulated with repeated dosing. |
Three practical takeaways. First, the clearest calming result came from a single serving given ahead of a stressor, not from a daily course, so time it 1 to 4 hours before trailering, the farrier or a new barn. Second, the joint-comfort and safety studies used daily dosing over two to six weeks, so judge everyday comfort over that window. Third, CBD changes some bloodwork in some horses, so long-term use belongs in your vet's plan, especially for horses prone to metabolic syndrome. Full details of our own studies, including the transport result, are on our equine study page.
HempMy Pet for horses and large dogs
How Much CBD Oil to Give a Horse
Published horse studies used roughly 0.3 to 3 mg of CBD per kg of body weight. Our Tarleton studies used 0.3 to 0.6 mg/kg. Start at the low end and adjust over two to three weeks.
| Horse weight | 0.3 mg/kg | 0.6 mg/kg | HempMy Pet pumps (~20 mg each) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 lb (pony, yearling) | ~70 mg | ~135 mg | about 4 to 7 |
| 800 lb | ~110 mg | ~220 mg | about 5 to 11 |
| 1,000 lb (average) | ~135 mg | ~270 mg | about 7 to 13 |
| 1,200 lb | ~165 mg | ~325 mg | about 8 to 16 |
| 1,500 lb (draft, large warmblood) | ~205 mg | ~410 mg | about 10 to 20 |
1 lb = 0.4536 kg; figures rounded. For any other brand, divide the mg you want by that bottle's mg per mL (quality table above) to get the mL to give.
- Top-dress it on a small amount of feed or a handful of mash so the whole serving gets eaten; oil smeared through a full bucket can be sorted out.
- For a known stressor (trailering, the farrier, clipping, a new barn), give one serving 1 to 4 hours beforehand. That timing matches when blood levels peaked in the Tarleton study.
- For everyday comfort in an older or working horse, give it once daily at the same time and judge it after two to three weeks. Note a baseline first: how he moves out of the stall, how he takes the first trot, how he stands for the farrier.
- Hold a dose for a week before you change it, and move up in small steps.
- Store it cool and dark with the cap or pump closed.
Competition Rules and Withdrawal
If your horse shows, this section matters more than price. US Equestrian announced that from 1 September 2019, a positive test for cannabidiol or its metabolites is a violation of its drugs and medications rule, the same as any other forbidden substance. There is no published, validated withdrawal time for CBD in horses, and the 2026 pony study found CBD accumulates with repeated dosing. ElleVet labels its own horse pellets "not show safe". Talk to your veterinarian and check your governing body's current rules before giving any CBD product to a competition horse, and stop well before any event.
Side Effects and When to Call Your Vet
At the doses studied, CBD has been well tolerated in horses, but it is not inert. The lab changes to know about are higher liver enzymes and mildly low calcium (Yocom 2022, reversible after stopping) and a higher insulin response in ponies (Wermer 2026). The 2025 Cornell-led study, which included liver biopsies, found no liver damage at 1 mg/kg twice daily for six weeks. Call your vet before starting CBD if your horse:
- has equine metabolic syndrome, insulin dysregulation or a history of laminitis
- takes other daily medication, including phenylbutazone or other NSAIDs
- has known liver disease or abnormal bloodwork
- is pregnant or a broodmare
- competes under USEF, FEI or racing rules
Stop and call your vet if you see unusual dullness, wobbliness, loss of appetite or colic signs. For background on how CBD works in the horse's endocannabinoid system, see our explainer, and for more dosing detail our horse CBD dosage guide.
Where HempMy Pet Fits
We make one of these oils, so weigh this paragraph accordingly. On price per mg we are in the middle: about 30% more than Green Element per mg, and half of Bailey's. What we can show that the others mostly cannot: we grow, extract and bottle the hemp on our own Colorado farm, every batch's COA is public, and our equine formula is the product Tarleton State University researchers tested, with the positive result (calmer stall behavior after one serving) and the null results (no change on daily dosing or in transport stress) both published. Hemp supports calm and everyday comfort; it does not replace your vet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use CBD oil on horses?
Yes. Hemp-derived CBD oil under 0.3% THC is widely given to horses, usually top-dressed on feed. It is not an FDA-approved drug for horses, so it is sold as a supplement. Controlled studies have found it well tolerated: a 2025 study fed 7 horses 1 mg/kg of full-spectrum CBD or CBDA twice daily for 6 weeks with no clinically relevant bloodwork changes and normal liver biopsies. Talk to your vet first if your horse takes other medication or competes.
What is the best CBD oil for horses?
The best CBD oil for a horse is a full-spectrum hemp extract with a current certificate of analysis, a stated mg of CBD per mL, and a fair price per mg in a size that lasts a month. In our October 2026 comparison of six brands, large bottles ran $0.031 to $0.080 per mg. HempMy Pet is the only brand that grows its own hemp and has university studies of its own horse oil; Green Element and HolistaPet are cheaper per mg; Innovet is the most concentrated.
What is the best CBD product for horses with arthritis?
For an older horse with stiff joints, owners usually choose a full-spectrum oil given daily with feed and judged over two to three weeks. In a 2024 study of 20 horses with mild joint osteoarthritis, horses given CBD oil alongside phenylbutazone had lower chronic pain scale scores (median 3 vs 7) than horses on phenylbutazone alone. CBD supports joint comfort; it does not replace your vet's diagnosis or treatment plan, so keep them involved.
Does CBD help horses with anxiety?
The best evidence is for a single serving before a known stressor. In Tarleton State University's stalled-horse study of HempMy Pet's oil, one serving lowered stereotypic stall behaviors compared with a control (P = 0.03), and on 0.6 mg/kg aggression fell from 113 to 26 counts. Five days of daily dosing showed no behavior difference, and a 3-hour transport trial found no change in cortisol. So time a serving 1 to 4 hours before trailering, the farrier or a new barn.
How much CBD oil should I give my horse?
Published horse studies used roughly 0.3 to 3 mg of CBD per kg of body weight. HempMy Pet's Tarleton studies used 0.3 to 0.6 mg/kg, which for a 1,000-lb (454 kg) horse is about 135 to 270 mg per serving. Start at the low end, give it with feed, and adjust over two to three weeks. Divide your target mg by the bottle's mg per mL to get the amount to give. Confirm with your vet.
How long does CBD take to work in horses?
In HempMy Pet's Tarleton dose study, blood CBD levels peaked about 1 to 4 hours after an oral serving and were back to baseline by about 24 hours. That is why a single serving is timed 1 to 4 hours before a stressful event. For everyday comfort, allow two to three weeks of consistent daily use before judging the result.
Is CBD safe for horses? What are the side effects?
At studied doses it has been well tolerated, with lab changes worth knowing about. In a 6-week study (Yocom 2022), mild low calcium appeared in all 12 horses and liver enzymes rose in 8 of 12, all improving or normalizing within 10 days of stopping. A 2025 study found no liver changes on biopsy at 1 mg/kg twice daily. A 2026 pony study found a higher insulin response on CBD, so take extra care with horses prone to metabolic syndrome. Ask your vet about bloodwork for long-term use.
Can a horse compete while on CBD?
Not under US Equestrian rules. Since September 1, 2019, USEF has treated a positive test for cannabidiol or its metabolites as a violation, and there is no published, validated withdrawal time for CBD in horses. Studies show CBD can accumulate with repeated daily dosing, so stop well ahead of any competition and ask your vet and governing body before you use it in a show horse.
Is full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD better for horses?
Full-spectrum keeps the hemp plant's minor cannabinoids, including CBDA, and trace THC under 0.3%. Broad-spectrum removes the THC. The 2025 Cornell-led horse study found CBDA reached serum levels about eight times higher than CBD (peak 103 vs 12 ng/mL) at the same dose, which favors whole-plant extracts that retain CBDA. For a horse in drug-tested competition, neither is allowed under USEF rules.
CBD oil or CBD pellets for horses?
Oils let you measure the dose exactly and adjust it by weight; pellets are easier to feed to a horse that eats them but are harder to fine-tune. Oil is the format used in almost all horse CBD research, including the Tarleton, Cornell and Colorado State studies. If your horse sorts oil out of feed, mix it into a small handful of a favorite feed or a mash first.
Is hemp seed oil the same as CBD oil for horses?
No. Hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds and contains essentially no CBD; it is a fat and omega supplement. CBD oil (hemp extract) is made from the flowers and leaves and states its milligrams of CBD on the label. If a horse product lists no mg of CBD or cannabinoids, it is probably seed oil. Several brands use hemp seed oil as the carrier for their CBD extract, which is fine.
The Short Version
- Buy a full-spectrum (or broad-spectrum, for zero THC) hemp extract that states its mg of CBD, not hemp seed oil.
- Compare price per mg: $0.031 to $0.080 across five horse oils in October 2026.
- Ask for research on the product itself: only HempMy Pet and ElleVet have any, and only HempMy Pet also grows its own hemp.
- Use about 0.3 to 0.6 mg/kg; give a single serving 1 to 4 hours before a stressor, or daily for two to three weeks for everyday comfort.
- Not for competition horses under USEF rules, and keep your vet involved for long-term use.

Marc co-founded HempMy Pet in 2016 with his business partner Natalie Mondine, the company's COO. HempMy Pet breeds its own hemp genetics, grows them on its own Colorado farm, and formulates every batch in-house under human-grade standards — seed to sale, nothing sourced overseas. Every batch is third-party tested and the certificates of analysis are published. He is not a veterinarian. More about us.
HempMy Pet's equine formula was the test product in a series of studies at Tarleton State University led by Dr. Kimberly Guay, Ph.D., P.A.S., with co-authors including Trinette Jones, Ph.D. and William B. Smith, Ph.D. The stalled-horse behavior study (2021) and the transport study (2022) were presented as Journal of Animal Science abstracts, and the dose and feed work as a master's thesis. We publish the null results alongside the positive one. Read the equine study write-up.
