What Is the Endocannabinoid System in Pets?

March 11, 2025 0 comments

If you've researched CBD for your pet, you've probably seen the term endocannabinoid system (ECS). It's the reason hemp affects animals at all — and every mammal has one, including your dog, cat, and horse. Here's a plain-English look at what it is and why it matters.

What Is the Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors, natural signaling molecules (called endocannabinoids), and enzymes found throughout the body. Its job is to help keep things in balance — influencing mood, comfort, sleep, appetite, and immune response. The body makes its own endocannabinoids (two well-studied ones are anandamide and 2-AG) and breaks them down as needed to keep everything regulated.

The Two Main Receptors: CB1 and CB2

  • CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and nervous system, where they help regulate mood, comfort, and how nerves communicate.
  • CB2 receptors are found mainly in the immune system, where they play a role in the body's inflammatory response and recovery.

Because these receptors are spread across so many systems, the ECS touches a remarkable range of everyday functions.

How the ECS Keeps the Body in Balance

Scientists describe the ECS as a key regulator of homeostasis — the body's internal balance. It helps manage things like energy use, appetite, and the stress response, dialing signals up or down as conditions change. When the system is well-supported, the body is better able to stay in that balanced state.

How Hemp and CBD Work With the ECS

Cannabinoids from the hemp plant — CBD, plus minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBC — interact with this same system. Full-spectrum hemp keeps the natural range of cannabinoids and terpenes together, so they work in concert (the "entourage effect") rather than relying on isolated CBD. That's why many owners use full-spectrum hemp to support a natural sense of calm and balance in their pets. For more, see Cornell University's overview of CBD from hemp.

Why It Matters for Your Dog, Cat, or Horse

Because dogs, cats, and horses all have an endocannabinoid system, full-spectrum hemp can support calm, comfort, and everyday wellness across species. Explore HempMy Pet's organic, full-spectrum range: hemp for dogs, CBD hemp for cats, and hemp & CBD for horses — all grown and made on our own certified-organic Colorado farm and third-party tested.
