Onset and Duration: How Long Hemp Oil Takes to Work in Dogs

The short answer, from canine pharmacokinetic studies: peak blood concentration arrives roughly 1.5 to 3 hours after an oral serving, and the elimination half-life in most studies falls between about 2 and 8 hours, depending on the amount and the formulation.

But "how long does it last" and "how long does it stay in the system" are two different questions, and almost every page conflates them. This one separates them.

Time to Peak

Colorado State University researchers measured peak plasma at 1.5 hours at the lower amount tested and 2 hours at the higher one. A separate Italian study at 1 mg/kg found peak at about 2.2 hours. A 2024 study across four formulations, in fasted dogs, found peaks between 2.0 and 3.2 hours depending on the preparation, with the oil-based product peaking latest and highest.

So: expect a couple of hours, not minutes. If your dog seems different twenty minutes after a serving, that is not the cannabinoids arriving.

The Sublingual Myth

You will read everywhere that you should hold the oil under your dog's tongue for thirty to sixty seconds for faster absorption. Researchers tested this directly, comparing oral against oral transmucosal administration, and concluded that CBD is not able to be adsorbed by the oral mucosa in dogs. Peak times and concentrations were effectively identical. The study is in Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Squirting it into the cheek pouch is worth doing because it stops your dog spitting it out, not because of sublingual absorption. Save yourself the wrestling match.

Food Changes the Numbers Substantially

A fed-versus-fasted crossover in dogs found peak concentration roughly 640% higher and total exposure about 1,000% higher when given with a meal, with far more excreted unabsorbed in the fasted dogs. Five dogs only, so hold the precise figures loosely — but the effect is large and consistent with feline data showing roughly elevenfold bioavailability when fed.

How Long the Effect Lasts

Half-life is the time for blood concentration to fall by half. Reported canine figures vary with amount and formulation: about 4.2 hours in the Colorado State work, about 2.7 hours at a lower amount in the Italian study, and around 8.5 hours in the 2024 four-formulation comparison at a higher amount.

That range is why twice-daily servings roughly twelve hours apart are the standard research interval — it keeps levels from troughing completely between servings.

Still in the System vs Still Working

These come apart. A 26-week feeding study found plasma cannabinoids declining to negligible within a two-to-four week washout after stopping — so traces persist far longer than any effect does.

That study also found elimination is predominantly faecal, not urinary, with only about 60% of dogs showing detectable urinary CBD at 26 weeks. It is a detail nobody covers, and it matters if anyone tells you a urine test is a meaningful way to check.

Why Week Eight Is Not Like Day One

This is the most useful finding for anyone starting out. Over 36 weeks of daily supplementation in beagles, half-life rose from about 8.8 hours to over 30 hours, and peak concentrations climbed with it — dose-proportional accumulation in the authors' words. Clearance decreased significantly.

The same daily serving therefore produces higher, longer-lasting blood levels after a couple of months than it did in week one. That is the pharmacological reason to be consistent and to give it time before judging, rather than escalating early.

Format Makes a Measurable Difference

Researchers compared an oral oil against microencapsulated beads and a transdermal cream. The oil produced substantially higher systemic exposure than either alternative, and the cream was far behind. Their conclusion was that an oil formulation gives the most favourable profile.

Biscuits and treats sit between: convenient, but slower and lower-peaking than oil in the four-formulation comparison. If precision matters, use an oil — hemp seed oil, coconut oil or olive oil formats.

Cats Are Slower and Lower
