What is Cannabidiol (CBD)?

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD can also be found in other plants such as Echinacea. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, CBD does not produce a “high”. It has gained immense popularity due to its potential therapeutic effects, which have been explored in human and animal health alike.

How does Cannabidiol (CBD) interact with the horse’s body?

Just like humans, horses also have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) — a complex cell-signaling system that plays a key role in regulating a broad range of physiological processes. Cannabidiol (CBD) for horses, is believed to interact with the ECS by binding or influencing its receptors, which can potentially help to support discomfort, mood, and other bodily functions.

Is Cannabidiol (CBD) legal to give to horses?

The legality of Cannabidiol (CBD) use in horses varies by country and state. Always check local regulations and consult with a veterinarian before starting any new supplement regimen for your horse.

What are the potential benefits of using Cannabidiol (CBD) in horses?

Preliminary research and anecdotal evidence suggest that CBD may offer several potential benefits for horses. It may help to alleviate discomfort. Some horse owners have reported positive effects on stress and mood support, which can be particularly beneficial for performance horses. Additionally, CBD might aid in promoting a healthy coat, although this is usually due to high quality carrier oils such as olive oil or coconut oil.

What are the side effect of using Cannabidiol (CBD) in horses?

While CBD is generally considered safe, it may have some side effects. These may include dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, drowsiness, and light-headedness. The risk of side effects can increase with higher doses. Additionally, due to the unregulated nature of the CBD market, there may be inconsistencies in product quality. Always seek the advice of a knowledgeable veterinarian when considering CBD for your horse.

How do you safely introduce Cannabidiol (CBD) to your horses’ diet?

A slow and controlled approach is best when introducing Cannabidiol (CBD) to your horses’ diet. Start with a low recommended dose, monitor your horse’s reactions, and adjust accordingly. It’s important to choose a high-quality CBD product specifically designed for equine use. Also, be aware that the effects of CBD can vary from horse to horse, and what works for one might not work for another. Always prioritize professional veterinary advice for personalized care.

How is Cannabidiol (CBD) administered to horses?

What should I look for when purchasing a Cannabidiol (CBD) product for horses?

Key factors to consider include the product’s concentration of CBD, whether it’s full-spectrum or isolate, third-party lab testing results, quality of carrier oils, and whether it’s specifically designed for equine use. Always opt for high-quality, reputable brands.

Can Cannabidiol (CBD) help with gastric ulcers?

While there is no direct scientific evidence to support CBD as a treatment for gastric ulcers in horses, some anecdotal reports suggest it may aid in overall digestive health and stress reduction, factors that can contribute to the development of ulcers. However, more research is needed in this area.

CBD can affect the liver’s ability to metastasize other drugs allowing more of the drug to enter the bloodstream. Always consult with your veterinarian before adding CBD to your horse’s regimen if they are currently on other medications.

Are there any long-term effects of Cannabidiol (CBD) in horses?

As of 2021, the long-term effects of CBD use in horses aren’t well understood due to a lack of comprehensive studies.

How often should I give Cannabidiol (CBD) to my horses?

The frequency of CBD administration can depend on several factors, such as the horse’s age, size, weight, the condition being targeted, and the specific CBD product being used. Full spectrum CBD is stronger than Broad spectrum or CBD isolate. Always follow product guidelines and consult with a veterinarian.

Can I use human Cannabidiol (CBD) products on my horse?
